Chatter, mobile, and AppExchange
Study topic 5.2: Chatter feeds, groups, and feed tracking, the Salesforce mobile app, and installing AppExchange packages.
On this page
Chatter lets people collaborate on records and in groups. The Salesforce mobile app brings the same data to phones, shaped by compact layouts and mobile navigation. AppExchange adds ready-made apps, which should be checked and tested before they reach production.
Chatter
- Feeds: Posts, comments, files, polls, and @mentions on records, in groups, and on user profiles.
- Feed tracking: Posts an update to a record's feed when tracked fields change (up to 20 fields per object). Followers of the record see it.
- Groups: Public (anyone can join and see posts), private (members only, joining needs approval), and unlisted (hidden from people who aren't members).
- Topics: Tag posts and records so people can find related conversations.
- Following: Users follow records, people, and topics to see their updates in their own feed.
Salesforce mobile app
- What users see: The same records and permissions as on desktop. The record header shows compact layout fields.
- Mobile navigation: Admins set the navigation menu items for the mobile app separately from desktop app navigation.
- Mobile-friendly pages: Lightning pages can use form-factor visibility, so phones get a simpler layout.
- Quick actions on mobile: Actions in the action bar let users log a call or create a record in a few taps.
- Offline: Recently viewed records can be cached for offline viewing and some edits, which sync when the device is back online.
AppExchange packages
- Managed packages: Built by a partner, with protected code and components, and upgradeable by the publisher. Most commercial apps are managed.
- Unmanaged packages: Templates and samples. Everything installed is fully editable, but the publisher can't upgrade them.
- Before installing: Read reviews and the security review status, check the editions and licenses needed, and install in a sandbox first.
- Install for: During installation choose who gets access: admins only, all users, or specific profiles.
- Uninstalling a package removes its components and data, so export anything you need first.
