Lightning apps and Lightning App Builder
Study topic 2.3: Building Lightning apps, home, app, and record pages, components, visibility rules, and page activation.
On this page
A Lightning app is a branded collection of tabs and utilities for a team. Lightning App Builder lays out pages from components without code. Activation decides which page a user gets, from the org default down to a specific app, record type, and profile.
Lightning apps
- App Manager: Where you create and edit Lightning apps: name, branding color and logo, navigation items, utility bar, and which profiles can use the app.
- Navigation style: Standard navigation opens one item at a time. Console navigation opens records in workspace and subtabs, which suits service agents handling many cases.
- Utility bar: A fixed footer of tools such as notes, recent items, history, or a softphone that stay open while users work.
- Personalized navigation: Users can add, remove, and reorder items in an app's navigation bar for themselves, if the app allows it.
Lightning pages
- App pages: A home page for a specific app, often with dashboards, lists, and quick links.
- Home pages: The Home tab. You can build different home pages for different apps and profiles.
- Record pages: The layout of an object's record view: tabs, related lists, highlights panel, activity timeline, and custom components.
- Components: Standard components (related lists, reports, rich text, flows), custom Lightning components, and components installed from AppExchange.
- Component visibility: Show or hide a component with filters on record fields, the device form factor, or user and permission attributes.
Activation
- Org default: The record page every user gets unless something more specific applies.
- App default: Overrides the org default inside one app.
- App, record type, and profile: The most specific assignment: a page for one profile seeing one record type in one app. The most specific match wins.
- Activation is separate from saving. A saved page that isn't activated changes nothing for users.
